Mock orange is one of the most recognisable and beloved ornamental shrubs in our gardens, valued primarily for the intense, sweet fragrance of its flowers. Despite its common name, it is not related to true jasmine. It belongs to the hydrangea family and owes its popularity to its exceptional reliability and low maintenance requirements. This shrub was successfully grown by our grandparents and is now also available in attractive new varieties.
The main ornamental feature of mock oranges is their white or cream, single or double flowers, borne abundantly along the stems in late May and early June, and in some varieties also in July. Their distinctive, powerful fragrance can be detected from a considerable distance, making mock orange ideal for planting near patios, gazebos and frequently used paths. Depending on the variety, these shrubs grow from around 1 metre tall in dwarf forms to 2.5–3 metres. Compact varieties suit small gardens and ground-cover planting, while taller ones work well as specimens, in informal hedges or at the edges of larger planting schemes.
Mock oranges are highly frost-resistant (USDA zones 4–8) and can be grown throughout Poland, including colder regions. They are also exceptionally tolerant of different soils. They grow best in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, but also tolerate poorer soils. They flower most abundantly in full sun. They also grow well in partial shade, although flowering may be less prolific.
Mock oranges flower on the previous year’s growth, so they should be pruned immediately after flowering. Remove the oldest stems that have become bare at the base to encourage new, floriferous growth and maintain a compact, youthful shape. With proper care, mock oranges remain healthy and dense for many years, rewarding us with abundant, fragrant flowers every season.
