Magnolia x loebneri is a hybrid of varieties Magnolia kobus (magnolia japońska) i Magnolia stellata (magnolia gwiaździsta), wyhodowany przez M.Loebnera w 1914 roku.
Magnolia x loebneri ’Merrill’ to odmiana wyhodowana w Arnold Arboretum w Massachusetts w 1939 roku . W 1952 roku otrzymała imię na cześć dyrektora tegoż arboretum Elmera Merrilla.
Magnolia x loebneri ’Merrill’ to silnie rosnący krzew lub niewielkie drzewo wysokości do 6 m. Wytwarza pachnące śnieżnobiałe kwiaty, które osiągają średnicę 10-12 cm. Kwitnie obficie na przełomie kwietnia i maja. Nadaje się do każdego rodzaju ogrodów – także małych. Można ją uprawiać przez wiele lat w dużych pojemnikach, jest dość odporna na mróz.
Magnolia requires a humus, permeable, slightly acidic soil and a shady, sunny position.
