Description
Albizia julibrissin ‘Tropical Dream’ is a bushy flowering tree with a large number of fluffy pink flowers standing on stems.
Flowering begins in July and continues until mid-September. Each day new flowers open.
Albizia is also called the ‘sleeping tree’ because the delicate mimosa-like leaves close each night like the palms of a Buddha.
The variety ‘Tropical Dream’ is the best variety from a selected group of seedlings from higher areas around Seoul (Korea). It is therefore quite frost resistant. The trees flower after just two years. Without pruning, the tree grows to a height of five to six metres. After ten years it can be pruned annually to encourage flowering, but this is not necessary.
‘Tropical Dream’ is the longest flowering, small, hardy tree for cooler climates. It requires warm sites with moderately moist soils. It is a very tolerant plant to soil conditions. It tolerates drought, alkaline soils as well as high pH.
With its unusual, exotic flowers, even one plant in the garden creates a unique ‘enchanted garden’.
