Description
Rhododendron 'Cunningham’s White' is an evergreen shrub of the species Rhododendron catawbiense, which belongs to the heather family (Ericaceae).
Produced at the Zymon Ornamental Shrubs Nursery, Catawba Rhododendrons are hybrids of the previously mentioned species. Botanically, the Catawba Rhododendron originates from North America and is characterized by good frost resistance and moderate growth rate.
In contrast to azaleas, also belonging to the heather family, rhododendrons do not lose their leaves in winter, and during extreme frosts, the leaves can curl into tubes.
When planning to cultivate rhododendrons in the garden, it is important to ensure several key conditions:
- The rhododendron requires a semi-shaded and sheltered position, protected from the wind.
- The soil prepared for the rhododendron should be acidic, rich in organic matter, well-draining, and moderately moist.
- Rhododendrons thrive best along the edges of small ponds, water features, or other bodies of water, where there is a moist microclimate.
- Rhododendrons definitely thrive better when planted in groups.
Rhododendrons tolerate transplanting very poorly, so it is essential to properly prepare and choose a location for the plant. Rhododendron 'Cunningham’s White' is an evergreen shrub with a slow growth rate and a broad, spherical habit, with leaves that are slightly glossy dark green.
It blooms early, in the first decade of May, and very profusely. From light pink buds, white flowers with a green-yellow blotch on the upper petal develop.
Rhododendron 'Cunningham’s White' can repeat flowering in August, although the second blooming is significantly less profuse.
The flowers are gathered in loose spherical inflorescences. 'Cunningham’s White' tolerates frost well, but it is recommended to cover especially young plants for winter.
