Description
Botanically, Hamamelis intermedia (Intermediate Witch Hazel) is a hybrid of Japanese witch hazel H.japonica and Chinese witch hazel H.mollis. Witch hazels bloom when most plants in the garden are still in their winter dormancy. Therefore, it's worth planting them in locations that will fully allow you to appreciate their striking blossoms and large, dark green leaves. Shrubs can be planted individually or in groups.
Hamamelis intermedia ‘Diane‘ is a large deciduous shrub with a wide crown, featuring broadly oval leaves that turn red and yellow in autumn, and dark orange-red flowers in the middle of winter.
‘Diane’ is recognized as one of the heavily blooming varieties with red flowers. It has been repeatedly awarded at exhibitions, including by the Royal Horticulture Society in 2001 for the best garden plant, and previously with awards: Award of Merit in 1969 and Award of Garden Merit in 1984.
