Cornus kousa ‘Satomi’ Compact

Description

Kousa dogwood is one of the most decorative trees in the garden. It comes from Japan, China, and Korea. Its unique loose, layered crown makes it an original element of the garden. The flowers of the kousa dogwood are not very visible or particularly decorative. The main ornament of these plants is the bracts, which surround the flowers and come in various colors and sizes.
The variety 'Satomi' was discovered by Akiri Shibamichi from Japan and named after his daughter – Satomi.
Cornus kousa Cornus kousa ‘Satomi Compact’ is a dwarf variety of Cornus kousa ‘Satomi’, characterized by spreading shrubs with a moderately vigorous growth, reaching about 1.5 meters in a decade. The foliage of this variety is vivid green with brown veins, turning orange-red in autumn. The bracts of this variety are reddish-pink, slightly lighter on the inner edge.
The Compact variety looks very attractive when trained into a spreading and dense small tree with leaves hanging vertically downwards.
'Satomi' blooms regularly in June and produces red, raspberry-like edible fruits in September.
Kousa dogwoods require fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic, or neutral soil.
The best locations are sunny or semi-shaded areas, sheltered from the wind.
