Description

Rhododendron yakushimanumGolden Torch‘ is an evergreen shrub belonging to the species Rhododendron yakushimanum, which is part of the heather family (Ericaceae).
Produced at Zymon Ornamental Shrubs Nursery, yakushima rhododendrons grow slowly and reach a lower height compared to catawbiense rhododendrons. They have a more spreading growth habit. Originating from Japan's Yakushima island, yakushima rhododendrons are characterized by good drought resistance and moderate frost tolerance. Varieties of the yakushima species perform well both when planted in containers and in gardens.
In contrast to azaleas, also belonging to the heather family, rhododendrons do not lose their leaves during winter. In extreme cold, the leaves may curl into tubes.
When planning to grow rhododendrons in the garden, it's important to provide several key conditions that will allow you to enjoy their beauty for a long time:

  1. The rhododendron requires a semi-shaded and sheltered position, protected from the wind.
  2. The soil prepared for the rhododendron should be acidic, rich in organic matter, well-draining, and moderately moist.
  3. Rhododendrons thrive best along the edges of small ponds, water features, or other bodies of water, where there is a moist microclimate.
  4. Rhododendrons definitely thrive better when planted in groups.

Rhododendrons dislike transplanting greatly, so it's crucial to prepare and choose the right location for these coveted plants. If you have any doubts regarding the selection or requirements of the plant, feel free to contact us, and we'll provide expert advice on plant selection.

Rhododendron yakushimanumGolden Torch‘ is an evergreen, compact shrub with slow growth and a spherical habit, featuring dark green leaves. It blooms profusely from the second half of May. The buds are dark peachy-pink, while the open flowers are cream-pink. The flowers are arranged in decorative dense, spherical terminal clusters. ‘Golden Torch’ exhibits good frost resistance, but it is recommended to cover especially young plants for winter.
