Description

Liquidambar styraciflua 'Gum Ball' is a rounded, dwarf, compact shrubby version of the parent plant, the American bamboo, with brilliant yellow and purple-red autumn foliage colour. After 10 years it reaches 180 cm in height and width. The bark is green in the first year, then grey, cracking and becoming corky, with characteristic ribbing that deepens with age, providing an interesting, fanciful decorative element to this tree.
'Gum Ball' does best in full sun or partial shade, in moist, well-drained, neutral to acidic soil.
It is heat and drought tolerant. It has a shallow root system.
American sweetgum 'Gum Ball' offered by 'Zymon' Ornamental Shrub Nursery is an unusual bulls growing on a trunk almost two metres in diameter, planted in a row it looks fabulous and colourful in autumn.
This variety can be used in most gardens, in urban greenery, to create espaliers and single plantings.
It can even be planted in small gardens as it tolerates pruning very well.
