Description

Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’ is a deciduous tree of height: 4-6 m and similar in width, spreading, horizontally stacked, with reddish branches.
. Leaves are simple, alternate, heart-shaped, young leaves are glossy reddish-purple becoming more chestnut-coloured as they mature. In autumn they turn green-orange-red.
. The small (13 mm) pink-purple flowers appear in spring when there are no leaves on the plant yet. The flowers are edible - they have a sweet and sour taste and can be added to salads.
. Requires a sunny position. Grows well in many soil types, except constantly moist, and adapts to acidic and alkaline soils.
Weather tolerant in USDA zone 5-6. Young specimens require covering for winter, branches are brittle and may break under the weight of snow.
Originally grown as a seedling at a forest nursery in McMinnville, Tennessee.
A very decorative plant for any type of garden.
