Description

Magnolia x loebneri is a hybrid of the cultivars Magnolia kobus (Japanese magnolia) and Magnolia stellata, bred by M.Loebner in 1914.
Magnolia x loebneri 'Wildcat' is a cultivar selected in Gibson, Tennessee, by L. Langford.
Magnolia x loebneri 'Wildcat' is a relatively new cultivar belonging to the Loebner's magnolia group. It is a small slow-growing shrub with very numerous white, open flowers up to 25 cm in diameter. The very interesting full pom-pom-shaped flowers are made up of as many as 52 (tepals), before fully open they resemble rose flowers, when fully open they resemble chrysanthemums. Flowers at the end of April and the beginning of May. It is suitable for any type of garden - including small gardens. It can be grown in large containers. It isfrost hardy.
Magnolia requires a humus, permeable, slightly acidic substrate and a sheltered, sunny position.
The cultivar 'Wildcat' was awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit 2012.
