Magnolia x loebneri is a hybrid of the cultivars Magnolia kobus (Japanese magnolia) and Magnolia stellata, bred by M.Loebner in 1914.
Magnolia x loebneri 'Donna' is a variety selected by H. Heineman in Massachusetts and named after the breeder's wife.
Magnolia x loebneri 'Donna' is one of the best varieties belonging to the Loebner's magnolia. It is a small shrub with very numerous white, star-shaped wide-open flowers up to 20 cm in diameter. It flowers in late April and early May. Suitable for any type of garden - including small gardens. It can be grown for many years in large containers. It isvery frost resistant.
Magnolia requires a humusy, permeable, slightly acidic substrate and a shady, sunny position.
The cultivar 'Donna' has received an award: the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
