Description
Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Purple' is a cross between Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck' and red-leaf beech. It has a narrow, columnar crown and can grow up to 7m tall and 1.8m wide after 10 years. The dark purple leaves of this magnificent columnar tree are hard to miss. The leaves are oval or egg-shaped, deep purple, 4-10 cm in diameter.
The grafted variety retains its colour and habit well. The inflorescence is inconspicuous.
Small nuts appear in autumn. Soliter prefers well-drained, not too moist soil, rich in humus. In winter, strong, upright branches surround a central trunk with smooth light grey bark, creating an interesting naked structure.
This is one of the most beautiful columnar trees.
