Description
Magnolia 'Old Port' has the form of a small tree or large shrub with an erect and compact habit.
The variety flowers very profusely in late April and May, a few days later than other varieties. This avoids damage from early spring frosts. The flowers are bicoloured on the outside dark purple in the middle white, with a nice cup shape and upright positioning on the branches. They open quickly which adds to the decorative value of the plant.
'Old Port' is an excellent cultivar for smaller gardens, as it grows to 3-4m and forms a nice compact crown. The leaves are large, with a vivid green colour. An additional advantage of 'Old Port' ishigh frost hardiness down to -26°C.
.
Magnolia requires a humus, permeable, slightly acidic substrate and a sheltered, sunny position.
