Description
Magnolia x soulangeana is a hybrid of the cultivars Magnolia liliflora and Magnolia denudata, bred in 1820-26 by the botanist S. Soulange-Bodin in Fromont, France.
Magnolia x soulangeana 'Lennei' is a magnolia with a loose habit, broad, growing to 3-4 m after several years. In late April/early May, buds appear on twigs that have not yet developed leaves; they are long, slender and are dark purple in colour, almost black at the base. The flowers are extremely impressive, delicately fragrant, reaching 12 to 16 cm in diameter and consisting of 6 fleshy petals, shell-shaped. They are dark pink on the outside, with a purplish tinge at the base, and the inside of the flowers is whitish with a delicate pink tinge.
The flowers are dark pink.
The cultivar 'Lennei' is one of the most beautiful and sought-after large-flowered magnolia varieties, flowering profusely in late April and early May.
Magnolia requires a humus, permeable, slightly acidic substrate and a shady, sunny position.
The British Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) distinguished the magnolia 'Lennei' by awarding it the First Class Certificate (FCC) in 1863, followed by the Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in 1984.
