Description

Magnolia x soulangeana is a hybrid of the cultivars Magnolia liliflora and Magnolia denudata, bred in 1820-26 by the botanist S. Soulange-Bodin in Fromont, France.
Magnolia x soulangeana 'Rustica Rubra' is a small tree or shrub with a loose habit and rapid growth rate reaching up to 5 m after a dozen years. At the end of April and the beginning of May, flowers appear on twigs that have not yet developed leaves. They are exceptionally decorative, delicately scented, reach a diameter of 10 to 12 cm and consist of fleshy, shell-shaped petals. They are red-purple on the outside, whitish on the inside with a delicate pink tinge.
'Rustica Rubra' is an old variety bred in the Netherlands, but it remains very attractive and popular is somewhat similar to 'Lennei'.

. Magnolia requires a humus, permeable, slightly acidic substrate and a sheltered, sunny position.
