Description

Magnolia x soulangeana is a hybrid of the cultivars Magnolia liliflora and Magnolia denudata, bred between 1820-26 by the botanist S. Soulange-Bodin in Fromont, France.
Magnolia x soulangeana 'Lombardy Rose' is a cultivar that takes the form of an oval shrub or small tree, growing to about 5 m. The large 12 cm and fragrant flowers appear before the leaves have developed. They take the form of large purple calyxes gently lighter at the tips of the petals. Petals (tepals) large oval, partly overlapping..
'Lombardy Rose' tolerates frost quite well. Recommended for all types of gardens, very attractive and popular, similar to 'Lennei'.
