Description

Magnolia x soulangeana is a hybrid of the cultivars Magnolia liliflora and Magnolia denudata, bred in 1820-26 by the botanist S. Soulange-Bodin in Fromont, France.
Magnolia x soulangeana 'Alexandrina' is a large shrub or small tree up to 5 m tall. It produces cup-shaped pleasantly fragrant flowers consisting of 9 rounded petals. The petals (tepals) are purplish-pink atthe base, turning white at the edge of the flower and white inside. Blooms profusely in late April and early May. The cultivar 'Alexandrina' is very attractive and popular, with quite high frost resistance.
