Description
Quercus palustris 'Green Pillar' is a striking columnar form of swamp oak. A variety obtained by William Flemer III in the USA in 1994, this tree makes a very interesting landscape feature and is ideal for use in areas where space for width is severely limited. A magnificent tree for use in streets, avenues, promenades and car parks, as well as in small gardens. The cultivar has extremely attractive shiny and dark green, leaves up to 18 cm long and 13 cm wide, with five to seven deep, fine lobes.
In early autumn, the leaves turn scarlet red to turn from deep red to brown in late autumn with an even brighter scarlet colour in cooler areas. The leaves often persist through the winter. The tree's habit is narrow-columnar, with dense and uniform, upright branching and the central leader persists without pruning.
The tree grows healthily, is not attacked by pests and is resistant to true mealybug. Adult specimens grow to 10-12m tall and 3m wide.
