Mulberry (Morus) is a genus of deciduous trees and large shrubs in the family Moraceae. In our gardens, Morus alba (white mulberry) and Morus nigra (black mulberry) are the most popular, valued both for their delicious, juicy fruits packed with health benefits and for their outstanding ornamental qualities. These trees feature dense, lush foliage, often with attractively lobed leaves that turn a warm golden-yellow in autumn.
Requirements and Cultivation
Mulberries prefer warm, sunny positions sheltered from strong, cold winds. They thrive in well-drained, moderately fertile, loamy or sandy soils with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Once established, they show excellent drought tolerance and adapt well to urban conditions, though they dislike waterlogged or cold, heavy soils. They are fully frost-hardy (USDA zones 5b–6), with mature specimens enduring harsh central European winters with ease. Mulberries tolerate pruning and shaping exceptionally well, allowing for easy control of their height and crown density.
Garden Application
In our nursery collection, mulberries serve diverse landscaping purposes: from traditional fruit trees in home orchards, to striking weeping cultivars (such as top-grafted 'Pendula') ideal as specimen trees for compact gardens, to sheared hedges and windbreaks. Mulberry is a versatile plant that seamlessly combines nutritional abundance with timeless architectural beauty in the garden landscape.
