Description

Magnolia x loebneri is a hybrid of the cultivars Magnolia kobus (Japanese magnolia) and Magnolia stellata, bred by M.Loebner in 1914.
Magnolia x loebneri 'Powder Puff' is a variety selected in Hendersonville, North Carolina USA, by August Kehr in 1987 so it is a relatively new cultivar belonging to the Loebner's magnolia group. It grows slowly and is a shrub or tree with a compact, pretty and regular habit.
The flowers of this variety are extremely attractive, small and full, pure white, have 18 to 25 petals and give the impression of a powder brush - hence also the variety name 'Powder Puff'. It flowers in late April and early May. Suitable for any type of garden - including small gardens. It can be grown in large containers. It isquite frost resistant.
Magnolia requires a humus, permeable, slightly acidic substrate and a sheltered, sunny position.
