Description
Magnolia 'Randy' is a small compact shrub, growing up to 3 metres. It is characterised by its fast growth rate. The cultivar 'Randy' is another of the hybrids selected by Francis de Vos and William Kosar in 1955 at the U. S. National Arboretum in Washington. It belongs to the 'eight little girls' group, the names of the different cultivars being derived from the names of the daughters and wives of those working and associated with the Arboretum.
'Randy' blooms profusely in early May the flowers are medium-sized to 12.5 cm in diameter, delicately fragrant. The leaves are elliptical dark green and it flowers like the other magnolia varieties, even before the leaves have developed. The upright buds are dim purple in colour. Cup-shaped flowers, composed of 9-11 red-purple overlapping upright petals ( tepals ),pale pink flower interior. The flowers maintain their intense colour throughout the flowering period. It is the most prolific flowering variety of all 8 hybrids bred in Washington.
'Randy' is recommended for small gardens. The variety is quite frost resistant.
Magnolia requires a humus, permeable, slightly acidic soil and a shady, sunny position.
