Description

Magnolia x soulangeana is a hybrid of the cultivars Magnolia liliflora and Magnolia denudata, bred in 1820-26 by the botanist S. Soulange-Bodin in Fromont, France.
Magnolia x soulangeana 'Burgundy' is a large shrub or small tree up to 5 m tall. 'Burgundy' gets its name from the deep dark purple colour of the flowers similar to the colour of Burgundy wine. The petals (tepals) are wide overlapping in red-purple colour, the flowers remain partially closed throughout the flowering period. Magnolias of this variety bloom profusely in late April and early May.
The variety 'Burgundy' designed for gardens and landscaped areas, is characterised by quite high frost resistance.
Magnolia requires a humus, permeable, slightly acidic substrate and a sheltered, sunny position.
