Description

Magnolia x soulangeana is a hybrid of the cultivars Magnolia liliflora and Magnolia denudata, bred in 1820-26 by the botanist S. Soulange-Bodin in Fromont, France.
Magnolia x soulangeana 'Geniewas bred in New Zealand by V. J. Hooper, introduced commercially in 2011 by P. Vergeldt.
'Genieis a magnolia with a small slow-growing tree with a bushy habit growing up to 3 m high. It is a sensational magnolia variety capable of repeat flowering in August.
In late April/early May, deep dark purple buds appear on twigs that have not yet developed leaves. The flowers are extremely impressive, delicately fragrant and reach a diameter of 10 to 15 cm. The flowers take on a beautiful shade of noble red wine during flowering, and consist of 6 - 12 fleshy petals, shell-like in shape.
The petals (tepals) on both sides are dark burgundy outside edge gently turned up and lighter fuchsia-coloured.
Variety 'Genieis one of the most beautiful and sought-after varieties of dark-flowering magnolias, requiring a humus, permeable, slightly acidic substrate and a sheltered, sunny position.

Magnolia x soulangeana 'Geniereceived the silver medal in the Novelty Plant Competition of the International Exhibition 'Green is Life' in 2013.
