Description

Magnolia x soulangeana is a hybrid of the varieties Magnolia liliflora and Magnolia denudata, bred in 1820-26 by the botanist S. Soulange-Bodin in Fromont, France.
The cultivar Magnolia x soulangeana 'Lennei Alba'was bred in Zurich in 1905 and introduced in the Netherlands in 1930 by W. Keessen.
Magnolia x soulangeana 'Lennei Alba' is a cultivar that takes the form of a spreading shrub or small tree of medium vigour, reaching about 5 m in height.
The large 12 cm and fragrant flowers appear before the leaves have developed. They take the form of large snow-white streaked calyxes, the flowers are monochrome. Petals (tepals) large, fleshy and ovate slightly turned outwards at the apex, partly overlapping.
'Lennei Alba' tolerates frost quite well. Recommended for all types of gardens, one of the most beautiful white magnolia cultivars.
Magnolia requires a humus, permeable, slightly acidic substrate and a shady, sunny position.
