Description
Fagus sylvatica 'Black Swan' has dark purple, almost black leaves, darker than other varieties and has a wonderful cascading habit. The leaves are broadly ovate, very glossy and turn copper-orange in autumn. They retain their rich colour only in full sun. Leaves on shaded parts of the tree will quickly turn dark green. The domed architectural shape of this tree at maturity, makes it a wonderful tree to have in the garden.
As with the entire genus Fagus, the best site is a permeable, loamy soil that is not too moist.
Beech trees will grow on most soils provided they are not waterlogged.
They prefer full sun or partial shade. Height and spread (after 20 years):7m x 3m
