Description

Magnolia 'Butterflies' is a small shrub or small tree growing to 4-5 metres. The variety is native to America, having been bred in Michigan in 1968 by Philip J. Savage.
. The cultivar 'Butterflies' starts flowering early, already in March, and blooms for several weeks. The flowers have a delicate lemon scent.
It is a valued and sought-after variety of magnolia, primarily because of the intense yellow colour of the flowers so rarely seen among other varieties.
Flowers initially conical consisting of 10 to 16 petals, at a later stage opening to a diameter of about 20 cm.
Looking at the flowering magnolia 'Butterflies', one has the impression as if the tree is being swarmed by butterflies, an impression further enhanced by the vertical arrangement of the flowers, on twigs that are leafless at the time of flowering. The leaves are dark green and up to 20 cm long.
Magnolia 'Butterflies' is very frost tolerant and suitable for cultivation throughout Poland.
Magnolia 'Butterflies' requires a humus, permeable, slightly acidic substrate and a shady, sunny position.
