Description
Magnolia x soulangeana is a hybrid of varieties Magnolia liliflora i Magnolia denudata, Bred in 1820-26 by botanist S. Soulange-Bodin in Fromont, France.
Magnolia x soulangeana 'Genie'® was bred in New Zealand by V. J. Hooper, introduced into commerce in 2011 by P. Vergeldt.
’Genie'® is a magnolia with a small slow-growing tree with a bushy habit growing up to 3 m high. It is a sensational variety of magnolia capable of repeating flowering in August.
In late April and early May, on twigs that have not yet developed leaves, bursting buds appear with deep dark purple color. The flowers are extremely impressive, delicately fragrant, reaching a diameter of 10 to 15 cm. The flowers take on the following color during flowering beautiful shade of noble red wine, consist of 6 - 12 fleshy petals, shell-shaped.
The flakes (tepals) on both sides are dark maroon shore gently turned up and lighter in color fuchsia.
Variety ’Genie'® is one of the most beautiful and sought-after varieties of dark flowering magnolias, it requires a humus, permeable, slightly acidic soil and a shady, sunny position.
Magnolia x soulangeana 'Genie'® received silver medal In the Plants of Novelty Competition of the International Exhibition 'Green is Life' in 2013.
